- Established in 1984, Global Volunteers is an early pioneer of volunteer-assisted international development and "volunteer vacations." A private non-profit, non-denominational NGO, we mobilize some 220 teams of short-term volunteers annually to assist with ongoing community work projects such as teaching conversational English skills, nurturing orphaned, disabled and other at-risk children and their families, caring for community elders, providing health-care services, and assisting with labor projects such as landscaping, building clinics, or protecting critical habitat. Always working hand-in-hand with local people in teams of six to 20 volunteers, Global Volunteers contribute their skills and energies for one to six weeks to our hosts' long-range vision.
Volunteers of all ages, ethnic heritages, professional backgrounds and experience are welcome on all Global Volunteers service programs.
Our executive staff and governing board of directors are grounded in development philosophy and practical application, while our in-country managers are nationals who lead and manage our teams on the ground. We support some 100 host communities worldwide through ongoing volunteer assistance, direct project financing and child and student sponsorships and scholarships.
Global Volunteers is in consultative status with the United Nations and UNICEF. We're committed to genuine, ethical development assistance which advances international understanding and cultural respect while avoiding all manner of exploitation of local people and their communities. We subscribe to the international development community's highest standards for NGOs, and implement best practices to uphold these standards.
